A 7 page summary of the book "A Young Heart of Oak." The book is about the life of Harry Stuart Boldero who was a Midshipman on HMS Boadicea during the Zulu War.

Lieutenant Boldero became ill while serving on HMS Emerald. He was invalided home to England, arriving 17 November 1887. Knowing he was dying, Boldero asked to be sent to his father’s residence at Folkstone where he died on 7 December 1887.

The following is an excerpt from an article on “A Young Heart of Oak” in “The Methodist Magazine”, Volume XXXVIII, July to December, 1893, Toronto, referring to Harry Boldero:

“His hard work and exposure as navigator in the severe climate of the Newfoundland coast seriously affected his health. After three weeks in the hospital of St. John, he was invalided, and by slow stages was taken home to his father's house at Folkestone.”

Thanks Tom. I have the book, and read it from cover to cover. Like you say he dock at Liverpool but didn't want to die there so risked an 11 Hour journey to Folkestone. I have looked at his fathers relocations while in the service, but there is no mentioned of Folkestone apart from the part when Harry returned home, I'm trying to locate the house where they lived. Russell- Baker who was the commarding officer at Shorecliff met Harry off the train at Shorncliff station, from there he was taken by ambulance to his families place of residence, I'm just wondering if his father was in quarters within shorecliff camp?

Peter. Here's a memorial to the whole familey, it appears he had a sister,
Memorial location on photo. Perhaps move this to the Grave section.

Hi 90th.
I was after a signed copy by the author, which I was lucky enought to find.
Wonderfull story of his life, loads of letters to a from his parents detailing his aventures. But it has a really sad ending, but what a brave fellow he was right until the end.

Littlehand thanks. There is reference in the book to Grittleton. Harry stay there sometimes. And yes he did have a sister, which affected him quite badly when she passed away.
