The “Dublin Castle” was hired from the Donald Currie & Company line as a troop transport for the Zulu War. She departed Gravesend on 19th February 1879, under the command of Captain Penfold, R.N.R., carrying 6 companies, 3rd Battalion, 60th foot as reinforcements for the war in South Africa. Also on board were Ms. Jane Deeble and six nurses. The Dublin Castle disembarked its passengers at Natal on 15 March, 1879.

Hey Tom,
She also departed from Gravesend in jan 1878 with N/5 battery. My Great Grandfather James Cook was on board with his wife Ellen and 6 kids. N/5 shipped 700 round of gun ammunition and the 7 pounder guns. It docked in Cape Town on 3 Feb 1878, then arrived in East London on 9 Feb. Nice pic, thanks for sharing it!

Does anyone know the horseshoe shaped insignia represents above the Sgt stripes.

The Horseshoe shaped insignia is to show that he is a Farrier . Farriers are responsible for the making and maintenence of Horseshoes.
