| This is just a suggestion. How about a soldier of the month. Showing a photo of a soldier that took part in the Anglo Zulu War of 1879. This in stead of then Zulu War publications on the home page. We seem to be seeing the same books over and over again. As I said just a suggestion. Anyone else think it's a good idea. |

| Great suggestion, littlehand! If there is an interest in doing this, I'd offer this original watercolor for use, possibly done by John North Crealock, entitled, "Lord Chelmsford, shortly before Ulundi, July 4th, 1879" It presently adorns my living room wall and is ex-Ken Griffith's collection, and was used in Ian Knight's fine book--"Brave Men's Blood." The members of the forum might be interestingly surprised at the stuff that could come to light if littlehand's suggestion is incorporated. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

| Must agree with the books being the same. I guess that's because there's not much being written at present. But good idea Littlehand. And we have seen some of the photo's post by Isandula. |

| littlehand,
I think you are on to something there. However, “soldier of the month” will only give us 12 photos per year. Any ideas how to increase the number?

| This has been done before at the early stages of the forum going live. I would go with soldier of the week. A month is to long. great idea Littelhand. Also agree with the same old books. |

| Just another idea--what would the forum think about a very small tweak from "Soldier of the Week" to "Zulu War Image of the Week" which would not preclude the inclusion of items such at this: "The Heroic Defence of Rorke's Drift Against 5000 Zulus By 80 Men of the 2nd Battalion 24th Regt Under Lts Chard & Bromhead"-Isandula Collection This litho was again ex-Ken Griffith's collection and was used in Ian Knight's Brave Men's Blood and in Alan Baynham Jones and Lee Stevenson's Rorke's Drift--By Those Who Were There [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]. |

| Hi all
52 photos a year is a godd idea ("soldier of the week"). Why not a new topic for the photos only?

| See what your saying. The problem is though, many of the photo's on the relate to someone, something, and somewhere, forming part of the discussions. i'm quite happy with the Zulu War images. Just my personal choice. |

| Major Astley F. Terry, 3rd Battalion, 60th Rifles Terry served in the Zulu War, but inexplicably his service record was omitted from Mackinnon and Shadbolt's 1880 book, The South African Campaign-1879. Check your copy and you will see he is not listed on page 347 with the rest of the 3/60th officers. So understandably distressed at being left out of this book which so well shows the Zulu War record of its officer participants, Terry somehow managed to convince the publishers to redo the typeset so as to include his name and war service in his personal copy of Mac and Shad. Now inserted in this only copy, his personal one, of Mac and Shad on p. 347 between officers Colonel A. Tufnell and Captain A. Morris is the entry for Major A. F. Terry: "Major Terry served during the latter portion of the campaign, including the second advance on Ulundi. Commanded the two cos. which guarded the King (Cetshwayo) at the Ndaza kraal and escorted him to the Black Umvolosi." Terry also inserted, opposite his sevice page, a page with the engraving from the 18 September 1879 Illustrated London News of "Guarding the King in the Ndaza Kraal During the Night of August 20 from a Sketch by Captain Astley Terry, 60th Rifles"---this sketch depicting Captain Terry, Major Marter, and Lt. Hutton asleep outside Cetshwayo's hut with guards surrounding the hut. Finally, Terry added in his "one of" personal copy of Mac and Shad, his portrait as a frontispiece.
