- POT, i have a medal too 2732. J.DAVIS with 1879 clasp 5th brigade N Battery, says he died on service, any info would be appreciated
I found the following information on Davis from the Medal Roll for N/5 Gunner John Davis #2732, engaged against the Zulu, died 31Oct 1879. I'll keep looking to see why he died. If he had bee killed in action the notation on th emedal roll would have been "killed" instead of "dead". Petty Officer Tom |

| I have found
"Gunner J. Davis fought in the Zulu Wars as a member of the N Battery 5th Brigade Royal Artillery. He was killed in action at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879 "

| Littlehand,
What was the source for you post on J. Davis?
I checked the medal roll again. There is a Gunner John Davis #2732 who died 31-10-79 and a Gunner Isaac Davis #1634 who was killed on 22-1-79.
If your source is using the initial only for the first name, then it is possible that the “I” was mistaken for a “J”. (Those two letters look very similiar on the medal roll, which is hand written.) I would post a copy of the medal roll, but it is locked and I can’t copy that page.
Petty Officer Tom
