Hi Tasker. Just seen your post. If you are interested in the IPL (Indian Premier League), then go to ITV4, it's just starting. It's T20 (20 overs per side), and they play in the coloured clothing that look like jimjams (pyjama's).

It's none other than "Edmund John Fowler VC" He was around 18 years old, and a Private in the 2nd Battalion, 90th Regiment of Foot (Perthshire Volunteers), British Army during the Zulu War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 28 March 1879 at the Battle of Hlobane, South Africa, Private Fowler, with a captain and a lieutenant (Henry Lysons) dashed forward in advance of the party which had been ordered to dislodge the enemy from a commanding position in natural caves up the mountain. The path was so narrow that they had to advance in single file and the captain who arrived first at the mouth of the cave was instantly killed. The lieutenant and Private Fowler undismayed by the death of their leader, immediately sprang forward and cleared the enemy out of their stronghold.

| I wonder why Fripp painted a lad that was not even in the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) regiment, but in the 90th (Perthshire Volunteers), and was not even at iSandlwana? Why didn't Fripp paint this brave lad showing the action that he won his VC for, seems rather odd that he should portray this young chap as a member of the doomed 24th at iSandlwana, when he could have portrayed him in his actual role as a Victoria Cross winner at Hlobane? Strange indeed, unless he had some other motive for doing this, but what I wonder.

90th/Impi [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]A pretty good description of the painting. Ive never heard the decription offered impi and would really benefit from knowing where it comes from. I would agree with 90th and Emma Mardsley that the 'Drummer' depicted is 12 or 13. Cheers

90th, Springy, thanks for your help and guidance in answering my question, I certainly agree that the boy in Fripp's picture is only 10-12 years old. As Emma Mardsley describes him, he is just "a drummer boy," added to the scene by Fripp "for dramatic effect." As she states, the average age of a drummer boy in the 24th at iSandlwana was in fact 24, but Fripp has added him in for effect, based no doubt on the drummer boy rumours that were perpetuated in the days following the battle.

Now that is more like it, the 'little lad' was added in by Fripp for dramatic effect (much like the bandage around the head of the lance sergeant). I thought it didn't make much sense portaying a young lad who wasn't at iSandlwana, and who was also in another regiment (90th Perthshire Volunteers), and who won a VC at Hlobane. It just didn't make sense depicting this brave young fellow as one of the doomed 24th at iSandlwana, when in actual fact he won a VC at Hlobane. I wonder if there is a painting of this gallant young chap showing him winning his VC at Hlobane, does anyone know?

Hi Gary me old wombat, :p;: Thanks for the info mate. Yes, I don't know where impi got that from, but it did seem rather odd for Fripp to depict a VC winner as one of the doomed 24th at iSandlwana. Thanks mate, if you find the picture, I will be very grateful. Are you watching the Pyjama Game buddy, :p;:

| Here you go Martin me old mate ! . This is the cover of a book by James Bancroft . Capt Campbell is laying dead in the foreground shot through the head at the Cave mouth , Sub Lt Lysons in the Blue Patrol Jacket and Pvt Fowler in the Red Serge Coat . This book is way to expensive , if you wish to buy it search around , I have it and I wouldnt say it was compulsory reading but that is only my own humble opinion ! . | Thanks for the link 90th, the painting and picture are quite emotive - a brave man. Fowler'sVC action is very similar to the cave clearing action which Henry Harford performed at Sihayo's kraal. Some commentators believe Henry Harford should have won the VC, particularly as he carried out a second, similar and equally courageous action some weeks later up in the Matshanas. |

Hi impi. Don't worry mate, the man that can't make a mistake can't do anything, and we all make mistakes, so no problems buddy. But I did think it was a bit odd that Fripp should portay a VC winner as a member of the doomed 24th at iSandlwana.

Sure, we all make mistakes and I have no issue with posters making mistakes. I've certainly made my share! However, if you're going to butt into a discussion, do have the courtesy to first, read the previous posts in order that you at least understand what is being spoken about, and, leave the poor attitude out of it.
