| "Inspector-General of Hospitals and Fleets JOHN GRANT, M.A., M.B., who also receives the C.B., entered the navy in 1868, he was specially promoted for services when in charge of small-pox patients in 1870. He served on shore in the Kaffir War in 1877, landed with the Naval Brigade in the Zulu War, and served during the Egyptian Campaign in the Eastern Soudan and was in action with the Royal Marine Battalion at Tamanieb". |

7 May 1868 Entered the Navy as an Acting Assistant Surgeon (Later changed to Surgeon in 1873) on HMS Canopus (Devonport)
9 Jun 1869 Assistant Surgeon on HMS Elk (Gun Vessel, China Station)
Dec 1872 Appointed Assistant Surgeon to HMS Cliio
1873 Assistant Surgeon re-designated to Surgeon
24 Dec 1874 Surgeon on HMS Hector (Coast Guard Service, Southampton Water)
3 Apr 1876 Surgeon on HMS Flora (Guard Vessel,, Simon’s Bay, Cape of Good Hope) during the Kaffir War (1877) served ashore with the 88th Regiment; Feb – Mar 1879 tended the small pox patients of HMS Boadicea, specially promoted; After the expiration of the quarantine of “Flora” in April 1879 he was seconded to HMS Boadicea for Naval Brigade during the second stage of the Zulu War, accompanied brigade to Port Durnford; served ashore from 20 Apr to 27 Jul 1879; mentioned in despatches, South Africa medal with “1877-8-9” clasp. While at Simon’s Bay he was Secretary of the Royal Naval Club in Simons Town from 1876 to 1879.

3 Jul 1883 Staff Surgeon on HMS Orontes (Troopship) served during the Operations in Eastern Sudan in 1884; He became Medical Officer in charge of Transports, accompanying the Royal Marines Battalion at the Battle of Tamanieb, and was” Mentioned in Despatches” for his admirable arrangements for the sick and wounded; “Suakin” clasp
