| Seems to be primarily South African geneaology .
For those with UK ancestors it is worth taking the 14 day free trial offered by ancestry.co.uk . All the census' and BMD indexes - cancel after two weeks and it costs nothing . |

| Gary I'm very interested in Genealogy and I read your post, tell me is there any catch because, I know you don't get nothing for free. Do you have to register credit card details ECT? Have you tried this website ancestry.co.uk before, are you a member. If is free for 14 days with no strings I will have ago. Could you give any tips on how to use ancestry.co.uk?

| Hi , yes , you do have to register credit card details for the free trial and if you dont cancel they start to take money .
I think they hope that enough people will start a paid subscription when they see how much info is available .
It is very simple to use - enter all the details you have and it searches for you . Obviously if you are searching for a common name then you can get thousands of possibles and you have to sift through them , but you can choose to search , for example only in the census for a particular year to narrow it down abit.
I have a paid subscription and i have in two weeks things which i previously spent years looking for.
Hope this helps a bit .
best regards,
Gary |

| sas1 What Gary is saying is correct; I took the trial period and found what I was looking for with no trouble.
I think you will find that most sites, of this nature ask for your credit card details. I did cancel within the required period and had no monies what so ever taken from my account. It’s defiantly worth looking at...

| There is so much imformation available you need to have a definate plan of what you are going to look for to avoid going off at a tangent - and start the free trial when you have some free time , at least a free weekend , it takes abit of time to see what is available and to learn how to navigate the site :study:
Good luck ! |

| Thanks Gary.
Euston we have a problem.
I did try to register on the wed-site for the free trial period. But for some unknown reason a message kept appearing saying error 414 or something like that. Does anyone know what this? I know for a fact my card is ok.
Is there any other good site out there that covers the same subject?

I have not tried to register. Maybe a problem with that particular website.
Gary might be able to help or have a suggestion.

| Found this but i dont think it will help very much
Resolving 414 errors - general
This error seldom occurs in most Web traffic, particularly when the client system is a Web browser. The URLs in this case are typically standard hyperlinks found on Web pages. These links tend to be too large if they are simply wrong i.e. the Web page containing the link has been badly coded.
If your client system is not a Web browser, the problem can only be resolved by examining what the client is trying to do then discussing with your ISP why the Web server rejects the size of the URL sent by the client system.
I registered and have had no problems signing in etc.
try registering on another computer - once you have an account you can access it from any computer with your user name and password.
sorry cant be of more help. |

| Thanks Gary. A friend of mine looks at your posting and he agrees with you. I have tried a few times since your posting with the same result.
Do you know of any other web sites along the same lines?

| Have you tried the IGI , which is free on - line but doesnt have as much detail as Ancestry . Have you tried to contact Ancestry to see if anyone else has reported the same problem ? It is worth the effort to see all they have available to search. |
