This book is the biography of Tom Vinnicombe and I bought a copy because I have his Boer War QSA in my collection. The book was written by a grandson, who drew on extensive family records. It gives excellent coverage of a family history in late Victorian/Edwardian Natal and the Transvaal. Tom was raised in Natal, but moved to the Transvaal where he made his name building churches for the Dutch Reformed Church. Although an English-speaking Transvaaler, he was liable for call-up to serve in a Boer Commando after the Boer War started. Much of the book deals with events of the Boer War as they affected him and his family, including his escape to join the British Forces (Natal Guides).

I know I am biased because of my personal interest in Tom Vinnicombe, but I think the book is well worth having, although it might not appeal to all who focus their attention on the Zulu War.

There are 18 pages relating to the Anglo-Zulu War in the book and many of these have large illustrations on them. Sadly there's no photograph of William Dommett Vinnicombe of the Frontier Light Horse who was award the D.C.M. for his actions at Hlobane.

There are some verses relating to Will and his exploits which add to the story including some information relating to the ambush of the Prince Imperial.
