| Our family know that we had a relative (or relatives), that fought in the AZW, the problem is that we didn't know for certain who and how many, however, through much research and with the very kind help of Kris Wheatley, we are more or less sure that one was William Cooper, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) regiment, who fought at RD. The others were all KIA at iSandlwana, one was in the Royal Atillery and two others in the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) regiment, and one of those was a relation of Ian Knight, so, you never know, Ian and myself could well be related, however, it is such a long shot, that I very much doubt it. |

| My paternal great grandfather, Albert Elkington, was the Gaoler at Msinga at the time that the Battles of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift were fought. He had a brother-in-law, Trooper Stretch of the Buffalo Border Guard, who was one of the survivors of Isandlwana.

| Thanks for all the replays , Iam fascinated by all of this, even when I was in the army , I had a chance to go to S.A. on the BATT ( British army training team ) which I was all up for as we were going to get a chance to visit RD and Isandlwana but my services were needed in sunny Afghan instead. Thanks again lads. |

I remember watching Stephen Fry talk about our ancestors, he said, just about everyone will have some connection, if you think about it you have 2 parents, 4 Grandparents, 8 Great GrandParents, 16 GG+Grandparents, 32 GGG=Grandparents and then 64, 128, 256, 512, 1,024 and so on, within a few generations you will have tens of thousands of ancestors, each one of whom is as responsible for your existence as the next, go back in time and pluck one of them out of history and you cannot exist. Only one of your ancestors out of 4096 will have your Surname that you somehow think is who you are but who you are is a vast array of people, so much so that if you have English or Scottish blood in your veins, then you must be related to Henry IV because you would have more ancestors going back then than the population of Britain. On that principle alone, somewhere in your family tree, you will have a connection to one or more of the men at Isandlwana. In answer to the thread, we all have a connection. |

The cheek of the bloke, Welsh indeed, Yes, I do have Welsh rellies, but none that I know of (or that any of my Welsh rellies know of), fought in the AZW, however, one that we do know of was William Cooper, and (like myself), he was an Englishman (as were the vast majority of the men of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) regiment), and he fought at RD and survived the ordeal. There are also another three possibilies that could be related, one of them being related to Ian Knight, they were all KIA at iSandlwana, and yes, they were all Englishmen. Springy, I hope you are still keeping the Red Rose flag of your native Lancashire flying high for us in SA 'Marra'. |

| BY the time you get back to 10th cousins you have about 1 million of them . No family historian goes back to 10th cousins - at least none i have met in 35 years of family history research . Which is was rather suprised when someone claims such a connection to a survivor . |

| Not strictly true no. In a small isolated community there was inevitably much intermarrying between cousins of various degrees of removal .
Pitcairn would be an example . |

| Hi All,
Not sure about the point being made about the cascading effect on family relationships that occurs naturally over many generations, or its relevence to the question. Indeed going back in time the, tree becomes very wide However, as the AZW occurred some 100 + years ago we are talking of two or three generations only.
Here are some more NMP related ;
Elizabeth Thom ( UK) granddaughter of Tpr George Mardall Alun Stevens (Aus) grandson of Trumpeter Stevens (Isandlwana defender) Barry Clarke (SA), grandson of Tpr Clarke (Dartnell Patrol) and great grandson of Maj James Giles, Commandant of Natal Volunteers
The grandson of Insp Campbell ( NMP) was on the forum in the past but I am not sure of his present status.
regards

I was speaking of my great grandfather's older brother. does that make me a "10th cousin four times" removed? |

| Which is rather closer related than a 10th cousin . I can't understand why you would come up with a seemingly random connection in the first place . |

| Hi, Many ! My dad had seven sisters, most of which had several off-spring. Very few direct male descendants left though. Me, my brother, our respective sons and possibly one other. A couple of descendants through J W/Fs brothers. My brother has spent years drawing up the family tree, it is vast ! |
