| I'm sorry if this is already been posted, or if I'm putting this in the wrong category. But we just saw this link posted on TMP (The Miniatures Page) which is a forum for all forms of wargaming. Someone had posted a link for a film clip they found about the Battle of Blood River (Dec. 16, 1838) . This movie was made in 1939, some 20+ years before 'Zulu', and it's about the Boers and the Zulus. It is one heckuva film clip, let me tell you....about 8 minutes. Sound isn't all that great, but the square-formation the Boers are in as 3,000 Zulus converge of them....makes your adrenaline rush at full-throttle.

I'll double-check after posting this, and make sure the link is correct. But wanted to share this with the Zulu forum here. I imagine that all the posters on TMP will be scrambling to try and find this rare movie, and I do wish them luck (smile).

| Kris The movie is still available, Im pretty sure it was used in the DVD by Ron Lock a couple of years back. When I visited Blood River last year it was running in the museum there, Im pretty sure it was also available from them.

| Do you happen to know where I could get it? I tried Amazon here in the states, and no go....but I asked for a VHS. I also need a format that will play here in the states, I think it's Region 1. If I could get a hold of it (and NOT bankrupt myself) what a fantastic Christmas gift for Dad.
I'll keep looking, I'll try the DVD bit on Amazon.....me and probably several hundred wargamers (smile).
Thank you,
Kris |

| Hi Kris
I was lent a copy of this film on VHS some years ago. No subtitles but it is well worth seeing in my opinion. If I recall correctly, in addition to the battle of Blood River it also covers topics such as the settlement of the Cape, the commencement of the Great Trek, the end of Piet Retief, Bloukrans Massacre and Italeni including the deaths of Piet Uys and his son (Dirkie?). I do hope you are able to obtain a copy. Moreover, if you are interested in learning more about this period I can thoroughly recommend Oliver Ransford's excellent book, "The Great Trek".
In case of interest I have added at http://gallery.me.com/umbiki#100367 some photos of the remarkable waggon memorial on the site of the battle of Blood River (I find viewing via the 'slideshow' option works best). Incidentally, in addition to this memorial and museum on the site there is also a separate Zulu museum on the opposite bank of the Ncome.
Hope this is helpful.
U
PS. Incidentally, a film of similar charm - but much later - is " Shangani Patrol" which documents an encounter with a colonial patrol and the Matabele in (the then) Rhodesia. There are clips on You Tube. |

| This forum is one of the BESTS I tell ya. Thank you all for info you've passed on about HOPEFULLY obtaining a copy of a VHS/DVD of Blood River.
That clip we've got bookmarked is just stunning, I especially love towards the end where the square kinda 'breaks' open as the Boer cav comes storming out to go 'meet' the Zulus. If memory serves me right, in Zulu, I think it's Chard that says, "you know how the Zulus feel about cavalry". And in the clip, when the cav heads out the Boers back at the square are cheering......what a sight!
I'll certainly keep you all posted....I just wish we were this lucky with obtaining some more info and a picture of our ancestor who survived Isandlwana.....Trooper Robert Kincade.
Thank you all again!!

| Talk about a response! (smile) Thank you for the links to download, but the concensus of opinion here is that we'd prefer to find a VHS/DVD to pop in the television. Also, we've got a screwy computer and I don't want to download something and the computer go haywire again (it's done that in the past).
Thank you again for the links.
