| Talking of J. Parkhouse, I very dear friend of mine, put this into my mail box for me. John Parkhouse Born c 1856 place of birth stated to be Bath / Bristol but no definite registration found. Son of Joseph Parkhouse wife (according to census) is Ann, maiden name unknown. 1860: 2 marriages took place in June qtr 1860 on same register page, in Bath registration district, the grooms were Philip Perchard and Joseph Parkhouse, the brides: Elizabeth Lilley and Sophia Shepherd. I have been unable to isolate either of these couples on the subsequent census returns so I am unable to say with 100% certainty who married whom or even if this is the correct Joseph Parkhouse. 1861 census shows family living at 19 Lower Borough Walls, St James, Bath. Joseph is aged 20 (would only have been 16 when John was born), and ‘wife’ Ann was 23. (would have been 19 at time of birth) son John was 4 years old in 1861 (= c1856 birth) and daughter Sarah was 3 months. No marriage registration can be found for Joseph and Ann, nor any birth in the name of Parkhouse for John. The situation with Joseph’s age at that time raises the questions 1) were Joseph and Ann actually married? 2) If not married at the time of the birth was John registered in his mother’s maiden name? Hence the reason no birth registration can be found in the name of Parkhouse. As subsequent census returns show Joseph with a wife called Elizabeth I think what may have taken place is that Joseph & Ann had a child but were too young to marry, the child was therefore obliged to take the mothers (maiden) name although he was always known by the name of Parkhouse. The mother later died and was registered at death in her maiden name, Joseph then married Elizabeth. (At this point the story appears to straighten out) 1871 census shows Joseph snr living at Argyle Yard, Grove St, Bath. Stated to be married, his wife at the time of the census was visiting the Jones family in Lugwardine, Herefordshire (she was born in Marley Herefordshire) and whilst visiting had taken the youngest child Albert with her. Living with Joseph in Bath are sons John aged 14, described as an ‘errand boy’, and son Joseph aged 7. Joseph senior is now earning a living as a ‘cellarman’. There is no sign of the daughter, Sarah. 1881 March qtr. John married Elizabeth Fox; Bath registration district. Census for the year 1881 (taken Apr 3rd) shows Joseph snr, wife Elizabeth, son Albert E. Parkhouse 11, and daughter Bertha Parkhouse 9, living at 5 Millers Court. Birth registrations have been found for these children, Albert was born March qtr 1870, and Bertha born Dec qtr 1871. Also living at that address with the family is 25 year old Elizabeth Parkhouse, “daughter in law” (john’s wife). Joseph is working as a wines & spirits porter. 1881 census shows John aboard HMS Royal Adalaide, docked in Devon. Rank given as Able Seaman. aged 25, married. 1891: Census shows John now discharged from Navy living with his wife Elizabeth at 4 Orchard Cottages, Bath, with them is their daughter Elizabeth aged 8 (born Devon) son Albert E. aged 5 born Bath, and son Edward aged 3 born Bath. John is now earning a living as a groom / ostler. 1899: John died at the age of 42 years in the June qtr of 1899 Bath registration district. 1901 census: Widowed Elizabeth living at 12 Orchard Cottages with son Edward, Elizabeth working as a laundress whilst son Edward (13) is a tram conductor. Also living with them is Elizabeth’s nephew Henry Fox, aged 33, a porter. |

| hi 24th. Yes, i own the south african war medal awarded to J. PARKHOUSE HMS SHAH, There are some photos that were posted back in april or may, i puchased it in 2008, from , billfriarmedals.co.uk, it was 545 quid and he sold it to me for 500 quid, there isnt to many naval medals around so i was happy with the price, as i purchased 8 medals off him, he was generous with discounts, i even got the wife and kids to buy into the medals, wife has 2, the 2 kids 1 each !!. i have purchased 12 in the last couple of years, and had them researched, can be very hard to read some of the papers. if you can afford they are a good investment, according to the medal year book, they have tripled in value since 2001 !!!.
cheers 90th |
