George William Thomas was born at Devonport Devon on 2 September 1856, to John and Betsy Hogben. His father served in the Baltic and China campaigns on HMS Majestic and HMS Sans Pareil, and in addition to the two unnamed no bar medals received an engraved LSGC on June 8th, 1875 while serving on HMS Britannia. George entered the RN in 1873 and served on HMS Britannia with his father. After the Zulu and Egypt campaigns he joined the Coast Guard and received his LSGC medal on December 6th 1884, and continues to serve until 1911 attaining the rank of Chief Officer. He had a large family with his wife Sarah. Three of his sons, Harold, Horace and Edgar follow the family tradition and join the Royal Navy. Each are to receive WWI trios, Harold gets promoted to Gunner and receives the Silver Jubilee medal and serves throughout WWII. Horace and Edgar receive their LSGC medals in 1924 and 1931 while serving aboard HMS Hermes and HMS Victory respectively. Certainly I was very pleased to find a three generation LSGC medal family, and would be most interested in finding any of the other family medals.

Hi Pick

Many thanks for the great photos of his medals and all the information on Hogben.

As he was born in Devon, I have now added him to the Devon Connection lists.
