| Hi Littlehand The question is did he take part in the Zulu War of 1879? I would say no, lets look at the evidence. In the first article it states Zulu War 1870 (could be a mis-print) I have also read in other Australian papers and they have reported Zulu War 1874 & 1879. The following is from Australian War Memorial records: Oldest member of the 1st AIF: 3664 Cpl George Paul, age 69. 4th Tunnelling Company, enlisted 18/10/1915, returned to Australia 17/3/17. Believed to have also served in the Ashanti War 1873-74, Zulu War 1879, Tel-el-Kebir 1882 and Boer War. Not alot of evidence there. We now need to look at his name "George Paul"Is there a G.Paul listed on the Medal Roll? Yes there is only one - 1155 Troop Sergeant Major G.Paul, 17th Lancers. Could this be our man? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Now we see the name of George William Paul.Littlehand post George Scainker Paul - So not the same name. I also have the following reference for George Scainker Paul :- George Paul had his baptism registered on 15 February 1848 at the parish of Dornoch, Sutherland so we can assume he was born somewhere around that time. His father was James Paul [b. 1832] and mother known as Kate. From George William Paul's service record we can see that his fathers name was George and his mother was named Mary. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]So George Scainker Paul and George William Paul could not be the same person. So far, I would say that he did not take part in the Zulu War of 1879, It is possible that he did take part in another South African action during the 1870's, but I do not know. I do not have copies of Ashanti War 1873-74 medal roll or the medal roll for the Egyptian campaigns, so I am unable to verify if he was entitled to them. As for the 2nd Boer War, I am in the process of checking. Once he commences service in Australia, then he is picked up by the official records in Australia. |
