"Goodman was born in St Stephens, Cornwall, England, on 12th December 1860. He joined the navy when he was 15 years old and, after training, he enlisted and was assigned to HMS Tenedos as an Ordinary Seaman in March 1878. The ship was sent to South Africa and ordered to the estuary of Tugela River which defined the border between the Colony of Natal and the Zulu Kingdom. The purpose of this expedition was to determine a suitable spot for landing troops and supplies on the northern (Zulu) bank of the river. Unfortunately HMS Tenedos ran aground and was badly damaged. A Naval Brigade was sent ashore but Goodman was not among them otherwise his medal would have had the 1879 clasp. He was assigned to HMS Briton in 1881 and was promoted to Able Seaman. This ship took part in the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 but again Goodman was not part of the Naval Brigade sent ashore. He was retired from the Navy in 1905 at the age of 45 with the rank of Boatswain but retained in the Navy reserves. He was recalled for the duration of the First World War as a Petty Officer with shore duties."
