| Hi all I am new to this forum and wondered if anyone can help.
I am researching George William Hudd, Pte 210, 1st Bn 24th Regiment of Foot who joined the regiment 26 May 1874 at Devices at the age of 19. Discharged at Devonport 25 May 1886 after engagement of 12 years.
It is said he was at Rorke's Drift but I have not be able to find any details Any information would be gratefully received
Thanks Roy |

| Dannemois Welcome to the forum. We are no experts, but always try to help. Even if its means spending time trawling the net.
From the RDVC Forum Posted: Wed Jan 10, 2007 8:54 am
In "The Noble 24th" the following appears:
Hudd, William George, 25b/210 Private. Attested 26/5/74, age 19 years. In italics is the following:
"There appeared in the United States of America in 1987 a publication that. By self-admission, leaned very heavily (and entirely without permission) on The Silver Wreath. The compiler of the work in question advances numerous theories, none of which is substantiated by actual documentary evidence. One such claim concerns the presence at the defence of Rorke's Drift of Private Hudd...In a newspaper article Hudd, who served in the 1st Bn 24th Foot, makes no such claim. In fact he professes to have been a survivor at Isandhlwana at which action he claims to have received a 'wound in the leg'"
But there is nothing to show he was a Rorke’s Drift. Hope that’s helps |

| Hi Old Historian 2 Many thanks for your reply. I already have a copy of book The Men of the 24th by Toby Giese and it seems to me a lot of the work is assumption with regards to George W Hudd. I am helping an old gent with the research who is led to believe he is a direct descendent of G.W. Hudd but I am finding it extremely difficult to make the connection.
It is said Pte G.W. Hudd was injuried, would there be any records?
Regards Roy |

| Hi, George Hudd was not at Rorke's drift for the battle, but being in the 2/24th he was probably there at sometime, he died in Bournemouth in 1922 and is buried in Wimborne Road Cemetery Bournemouth, his grave does have a headstone. regards rai. |

| Hello Rai Thanks for the info I have located and photographed his gravestone, that was the easy part, still trying to learn of his early life but at this time I am still trying to find the name of his parents. On three consecutive census's he gave his birthplace as Lewes, Essex but a search of their records prove otherwise. Once I have his birthplace I hope to push on and resolve the mystery surrounding this fellow.
Thanks for your interest Regards, Roy |

| Hi Dannemois
If you could post a photograph of the headstone, that would be great to add it to the site's database. I have not seen the headstone and would love to see it.

1879Graves How? It would appear this site prevents the sending of attachments; send PM with your e-mail address and I will gladly send you a copy of the headstone image. Headstone Inscription reads: In Loving Memory of my dear husband, GEORGE HUDD, late of the 24th South Wales Borderers [Zulu War] Died Feb 25, 1923, aged 67. Also of his dear wife Georgina, died April ? 1946, aged 84. There is also reference to a daughter but unfortunely the inscription is harder to read. Roy |
