Patent Magazine for Martini Henry

This patent is for a magazine to fit the MH. It appeared in 1884 but I don't think it caught on!

thanks .never seen that one before. there were a few devices that tried to increase the loading of the single shot rifles of the era. like the METCAFE device on the U.S. trapdoor springfield.

The Krnka Quick loader was actually trialled in 1881 along with the Mayhew, the Perry and a device similar to the Krnka from Enfield. The results were published in a memorandum on 2nd December 1881. It was not approved, In the event the Krnka was deemed to delicate, rounds fell out, there was no retaining spring in the trail model. In tests of 30 seconds and 1 minute it proved no gain in rapidy of fire compared to loading from the pouch. tests were carried out standing, kneeling and lying.

This example is the later 1884 model with the retaining tension spring (actually copied of the RSAF's example), if you look at my website you will see the Enfield Quick loader fitted to the Enfield Martini. In 1884 4200 quick loaders were produced

In the same trial in 1881, a descriptive of a new bolt rifle "the Lee" was investigated, and although the Small Arms Commmittee didn't know it, they had just seen the world beater.
