Extract from an article entitled Sherwood Foresters at Dinner "He regretted that one of the oldest Territorial-. ex-sergeant Champ. was not present. He had sent a letter explaining that owing to his age he could not attend, and wishing every success, to the 8th Battalion Sherwood Forester,. Ex- Serg. Champ fought in the Zulu War in 1879. so he was one of their oldest Volunteers and they were sorry he was not with them." Newark Herald - Saturday 24 March 1923
