| Turner was not at Isandhlwana but was the storeman (H coy) at Rorke's Drift and took part in the Defence. He was not wounded there but received a head wound from a bottle in 1876 which did cause him epileptic fits thereafter. |

| This was of course 25B/104 Pte. Henry Turner H coy 1/24th. He served with his company on St. Helena under Wardell and was I believe the only soldier of the original H coy remaining alive, the rest being killed at Isandhlwana. |

| Thanks to Kate's discovery of this newspaper article, I've found a strong indication that Henry Turner was buried in St. James' churchyard, Shere. Am hoping to find out exactly where before too long.....
Regards,
Tim |

There are other St Helena vets whose location is not clear on 21/22 January 1879 but recieved 1879 clasp - Thomas Lambert 1507, John Evans 371, Fred Johnson 957, John Lloyd 25B/174 and Bill Twycross 1789 (or 1787) - your notes. |

| Hi all/ Tim
There is also St Peters and St Paul's church, also, St Augustus Coptic Orthodox church in Shere. The article doesn't mention where he was buried, only where the inquest took place. I have searched find a grave, but nothing. |

| Eddie,
I've come across a separate piece of information which specifically mentions St. James' church. Will keep you updated.

| Kenny,
Evans Johnson & Lambert were listed with D & G Companies at Helpmakaar in the Jan/Mar 1879 pay-list. Twycross is listed with the General Depot PMB until 8th Mar 1879 and Lloyd was with Lt. Clements old M.I. troop attached 2nd Sqn Mounted Infantry.
Not totally definitive but it's all we have.

| I've contacted both St James' Church at Shere and the Surrey History Centre but neither seem to be in possession of the church's burial records which could help to pinpoint Henry Turner's grave within the churchyard; one of the church wardens has very kindly offered to look for a headstone, but of course there's a good chance there isn't one...
There is a record of a Henry Turner on 'Find My Past' being buried at 'Shere, St James' in 1883 (birth year given as 1851).
Kenny,
Do you happen to know the source of the information which indicates that Henry Turner died at (and was apparently buried in the grounds of) Guys Hospital please?
Regards,
Tim

| Tim, The reference to Guy Hospital is contained in notes by Alan Bayham-Jones which were last updated in 2010 and the world of on-line research has moved on since those days. Perhaps a copy of the death certificate may be give a better clue as to place of death. |

| According to author James Bancroft, in The Rorkes Drift Men, Heroes of the Zulu War, Henry Turner was passed into the care of the Surrey County Borough, where he was admitted to Guys Hospital. Bancroft says he died at Guys Hospital and was buried in the hospital grounds. Great to see new information come to light as Im sure this is the same man. |
