| Great find Steve, as you say large scale maps are invaluable. And while on holiday I picked up The place of the Elephant 1st ed. Its the history of Pietermaritzburg by Ruth Gordon. I found it in a small bookshop with a half a dozen other AZW books, The illustrated by Ron and Peter, Vol3 James Stuart Archives and Marching over Africa by Frank Emery. Because I took the whole lot he threw in an interesting book by Thomas Pakenham that I didn't even know he had written: The Year of Liberty, The story of the Irish rebellion of 1798.

| The Pakenhams are quite a family. I worked for Thomas's brother Michael Pakenham for a while and his sister is of course Antonia Fraser. His elder brother Patrick was evidently somewhat boisterous. As a defence lawyer in a drugs trial he was asked by an irascible but expert judge to pass him the package that had been found. The judge proceeded to try it, exclaiming that it was indeed cannabis. And where was it found asked the judge - in the defendant's anus said Pakenham.

| This is a rare beast. Just after our war but I cannot resist maps. It was produced by the Intelligence Division of the War Office in preparation for the Boer War and, as you can see, it was marked Secret. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The information was compiled by intelligence officers, much of the time working incognito. This small section on Klerksdorp (south east of Johannesburg) gives a flavour of what they recorded. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]This section was compiled by Capt. H P Northcott of the Leinster Regiment and shows how it was done. On a bike and cross-country! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Chelmsford could have done with something similar. I have visions of Durnford touring Zululand on his bike. Steve |

| Yes they are a good source. Don't they have a complete AZW run for £900? Sounds a lot but hard to put together otherwise. I got lucky with the IUP volumes. I only venture into the Boer War material if its map based.

Smail has a few out along the same lines, i love the fact that he has chockered it with so many illustrations.. its like having old friends around you.well, that's maybe just me. |

| Well done Gary. Ashes and Blood is excellent and so was the exhibition. I bought mine at the NAM which incidentally, is going to be fantastic when it reopens. My daughter visited the design consultancy that is carrying out the changes and saw the new designs. The displays are themed with the ribbon colours of the various campaigns. Can't wait.

If you need a book in French I do have one for sale Le Prince Imperial (1856-1879) by Augustine Filon, published in Paris in 1912.
It does have Louis in a pooh hat busby.
Let me know and I put it in the for sale section.

| Mr Young, Thank you very much for your offer, but I have a copy of "Le Prince Impérial, souvenirs et documents" by Augustin Filon. In France, there are not books written by modern French authors (except a comic "Zululand") or books from English and South-African authors translated in French about the Zulu war (except David Clammer, "La Guerre des Zoulous"). It's the reason why I have to study the Zulu war in English...It's not a whim or a caprice, I take no pleasure (and I have no talent) for learning foreign languages. Cheers Frédéric

| Frank,
If I can butt in there.
How could you mock poor fellows thus?. Nearly the Bard's coming & going day.
Most of us are interested in getting Ken's book coughed up the asking price months ago, and we are still waiting. I don't where the breakdown is or why.
Stephen Coan did a recent review of it and I mentioned the same to him. My copy was paid for back in December and nearly six months on, I still have got a clue when I might get it.
Moan over, Ken if you are reading this and able to advise please let us know.

| Roger that Frank, spending some time comparing the two is what i'm anticipating, yes i'm well jel, but its only fair that you got first go, johnny on the spot and all that. i have read coan's review as well i'm a bit disappointing about the lack of text..i'm sure that was an end product price thingy, but having it is the thing.. though like most collectors it will pall soon enough and i will be on to the next ' get '. it will become like an old mistress that one no longer feels inclined to stroke and pet as often as one used to.. |

| It really is a visual book, unless you are 100% familiar with the territory your not going to know where the shots are from so the rather scarce descriptions mean nothing. The beauty of the book as you intimate are the comparisons between the paintings and the photos and quite frankly the accuracy of old Crealock. His paintings are brilliant pieces of draftmanship and the fact that Ken could run them all down is just as brilliant. Some of the photos open whole avenues of thought and study, your very aufait with the goings on so you will pick up on the nuances very quickly. A classic example is the famous 'from my tent door' sketch of isandlwana camp. When you see the photo comparison you will be amazed how far down the slope from the mountain the HQ tents were. People tend to think of the camp being hard up under the mountain. That particular shot will blow your mind.

| JY Ive just spoken to Carrey at the publishers, shes sending me details of the UK agents and also the USA contacts. As soon as I have the e mail I will post it. Incidently she mentioned another small book by Ron Lock called Tales of the old East Coast. Very little to do with 1879 but it looks a treasure trove of old stories. Its around GBP10 so well worth a punt. Cheers |

| Frank,
If you tell Carrey, I have contacted Casement three times now.
The last time was about ten days ago, when I was told Ken's book had not yet been published. I told the girl I spoke to that had indeed been published. The payment was taken back in December, so I guess they are making a tidy sum in interest of the U.K. buyers' cash.
As I have moaned elsewhere in another place. The book was intended as a Christmas present, then as that date came and went maybe it could be a birthday present, but that came and went. Easter has been and gone, so maybe it will become an anniversary present in June! Who knows?
Maybe the publishers want to send me a review copy?
