| Frank are the letters from Bishop Colenso, or the Colenso family as a whole. |

| They are a series of letters spanning 1865 to 1893 from Francis, the Bishops wife, to Lady Mary Lyell and Katherine Lyell. Just general everyday life sort of letters until it gets towards 1878 then there is more detail. Nothing earth shattering just sets the tempo of the era really.

| Subject: Query on HCMDB Thu Nov 12, 2015 12:14 am | |
| Gentlemen, Greetings, having read the forum on and off for the past few years I've decided to take the plunge and join, especially to see the photos/attachments etc which I could not see before. Knowing the depth of expertise in the forum I'll just post a simple question so I dont appear too much out of my depth! Is there anywhere in the forum where you have a critique of Col Snook's HCMDB? (not a review) ie. I have read snippets where some disagree with his conclusions on certain things e.g. G Coy being wiped out on the firing line and would like to see the debate. I ask this because, due to personal cicumstances, the majority of my library is in storage and the only books I have are both Col Snooks books, FWD Jackson Hill of the Sphinx, England's Sons & Vol 1+2 of Sudies in the Zulu war by Julian Whybra, and Black Soldiers of the Queen PS Thompson. Incidently Vol 3 of Studies in the Zulu war has been mentioned, any time frame? Hopefully the books I've ordered (due in part, to positive comments on here) should arrive soon to stave off the boredom. i.e Isandlwana & Rope of Sand by J Laband, Dead was everything, K Smith, and Historical Records of the 24th to name a few. Hope to enjoy a productive time on here, many thanks |

| Greetings Bill and welcome. Yes there is a critique of HCMDB from its first publication. I made some comments at the time and im pretty sure 90th also did. Your book collections seems pretty rounded, enjoy Rope of Sand its one of my favourite books.

| Not sure whether this is the correct place for this comment, but I came across the Web Site for the London Gazette where much can be found and downloaded as PDF's and all for free. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/24695/page/2199. Please note that the link I have provided goes straight to Article 24680 (which I found most informative indeed but you must form your own opinion) Although not one of the usual sort of "books" for reference, it may still be of interest to some to download and possibly print as you wish. Bye for now Arthur |

Apologies for that, Dave. Not sure why that should happen. Anyhow, I have just checked this in my browser and it worked. If it doesn't work again, please send me an e-mail to arthurw@live.co.za and I'll e-mail it to you. However, I'll also check the link from this post once this is posted.
Please let me know if it works as it worked from my end. |

| The Abe version is the soft cover, 1880 second print. There are a couple of the hardcovers around Maggs has one at GBP 450 ( beyond my reach) There was one on e bay couple of months back but I missed it for US80, not in the best of condition but it was the same one put up for auction on the antiquarian site and that the one I was hopeful of getting. Im going to try and follow back for the dealer of e bay, UK based im sure.

| Harold Raugh lists it as having scenes associated with the AZW - Isandhlwana, Rorkes Drift , Fort Pearson etc. Which sounds like the usual stuff. At $4,500 definitely a Las Vegas price! This one is a little better. http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=4319739662&searchurl=n=100121503&bi=0&ds=30&bx=off&sortby=17&kn=photographic%20scenery%20of%20south%20africa&recentlyadded=all Steve |

| Frank,
Rorke's Drift; Isandlwana & Fort Pearson are included.
They are not true photographs rather they worked-up photographic prints.
The Rhodes Museum up the road from me has a copy, in my opinion it isn't worth the price quoted.

| My copy of 'Road to Ulundi' has just arrived. Had a glance through it rather quickly and then stopped and got totally involved for an hour. I have to admit when I ordered I was a bit concerned, Kens last books photo repro was pretty ordinary so there was a bit of trepidation. All un justified gentlemen. The repro by Pinetown Press is first class the photos are clear and very well done, the comparisons to Crealocks paintings are virtually exact and the write up and descriptions are excellent. Steve and Gary you have a pleasure waiting for you.
Ken well done mate an excellent publication and a nice signed first edition for the collection. A few of the photos bring back memories of traipsing through the backwaters a few years ago.
Cheers
PS excellent value for money. |

The first is otherwise only available as an original at an astronomical price, and the second is simply not available anywhere. Both are beautifully produced in hardback. Thanks very much Frederic!

| Bojour Frederic Merci mon ami ! . It's an excellent company isn't it ? . Steve I've posted the Link to DP & G Publishing several times on the forum and a couple of times to others via the pm facility , I cant believe I hadn't sent it to you ! . I've been shopping there for years , did he send you a list of their Zulu Publications that are available ? , I know he is reproducing several more papers & Booklets at sometime in 2016 ! . I'm off to the Market to pick up some more Prints I had framed during the week , will drop off 5 more !! . They also have a list of over 200 Negatives of photographs from Soldiers , officers , camps etc taken during the AZW , I have over the years purchased basically all of them , he sells the reprints for about 2 quid a pop ! , many of which I haven't seen in books etc . You'll find they are an excellent company to do with . Cheers Steve 90th |

Had in the same order Cetshwayo's Dutchman, Running the Gauntlet, and A Soldiers Life so they very kindly sent a free copy of Studies in the Zulu War (1st edition). Highly recommended company. |

Richard Feetham was with the Inns of Court Rifles and later became Town Clerk of Jo'burg and legal adviser to the British High Commissioner. A little after our war but large scale military maps of the area are pretty scarce. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Steve |
