| Hard to find even though it's not very old. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Dedicated to Cpl William Wilson Allen VC and donated to Belford Middle School by (I think) Audrey Atkin. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]And here he is age 6 on the 1851 census for Belford Moor that she refers to. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]I am trying to establish whether "Audrey Atkin" is a descendant, but a little sad that the school should dispose of the book I think. Steve |

| It's right. Allan was born in Belford, Northumberland. At the grand old age of 80 Audrey Atkin is alive and well and lives in Belford. Google her and you can get contact details. |

| From Bill Cainan..in another place..
A quick note to let you know that there is a new novel out on Isandlwana called "Brutal Valour" by an American called James Mace.
Ian knight and myself have done the proof reading to ensure he got both the Zulu and the military aspects correct.
A very good book and worth reading.
Thank you Bill.
The following blog i found most instructive, and very interesting. i can only find copy's available on Kindle and Softback.. i will get this book, i like the fact that the author goes into most detailed methodical ( it seemed to me!. ) research of his various subject's. so here we go again..has he found a new way of telling a very old story.. i'm interested enough to find out.. anybody out there who can dish the dirt on this guy?.

| James Mace
Born in The United States Websitehttp://www.legionarybooks.net Writes Historical Fiction so far on the Romans and Wellington's campaign. Influences claimed are C.S. Forester, William Altimari, George Shipway, Paul L. Maier
"James Mace developed his passion for history at a young age and has made Ancient Rome a life's study. He penned the initial draft of his first novel, "Soldier of Rome: The Legionary", as a cathartic means of escapism while serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq. He spent a career as a Soldier, and in 2011 left his full-time position with the Army National Guard to devote himself to writing.
His well received series, "Soldier of Rome - The Artorian Chronicles", is a perennial best-seller in ancient history on Amazon. With his other favourite period in history being the British Empire, his writing has branched into the Napoleonic Wars. He is currently working on a new trilogy about the Roman-Jewish War of 66 to 73 A.D., along with a side project about the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879."

| Latest find. Anybody know the significance of "Winterskloof" - presumably acquired by O'Toole during the making of Zulu Dawn? It feels rather like Chelmsford and Crealock have been re-united! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Steve |

| Steve,
The next time I see O'Toole's friend, Tim, I will ask him if he knows.
The principle actors were in the Babanango Hotel for the battle scenes, then run by Stan the Babanango Man.

| Good additions Frank, both nice to have, i was chuffed to pick up the cooper in the early seventies a battered paper back, i got a pristine hard copy many years later, although these works were relevant, they have been taken over in modern times, but as part of a balanced africana collection..spot on.

| Howdo Frank, fully agree, the origin of your quote seems to be lost in the mists of time, attributed to various people or indeed faith system's..i like you seem to be drawn to the ' bigger picture '. i guess most truisms are exactly that ie, based on long accepted views over maybe thousands of years. i have always shied away from giving political views..( i always seem to run into trouble. ) but when i read the more modern views of authors such as Marks, Duminy, Etheridge, Guy, ect.. i am left in no doubt that dark forces were at work in Africa for many decades before the AZW. one obvious example is the infamous ' Fathers of Confederation '. which took place at Charlottetown Prince Edward Island in 1864..which was to lead eventually to the Scramble for Africa..there are so many levels for the student to get his teeth into, but fascinating. |

| Hi Ulundi I don't read Novels on the War , but the chap who sold it to me , said it had many historically correct stories and quotes woven into the story , he didn't say it was a Novel ! , he probably realised I wouldn't have bought it ! , I paid about 10 GBP's , I haven't bothered to search around to see if that was a good deal or not , I got mine from the guide I had in Zululand back in May , I called into his wife's work in Pinetown to collect it , as he'd gone to he Cape ! . What price is the one you are watching ? . Good Luck with it . 90th |
